Wow. My feeling when I got back from my first run outside totally changed when I realised how good my new running app (RunKeeper) is.
I am working today, but have worked an incredible number of hours this week so I can forget about the job next week. I couldn't get on the computer system to do what I needed to do, so I decided to have a quick try outdoors. My gym bag was in the office so I got changed behind the door, attached my new armband, put the ipod on shuffle, started RunKeeper and off I went.
I couldn't believe how hard it was (or how unfit I was?). The first trauma is dodging all the dog poo. I went up the lines (a country trail thing that goes along the back of our house) but had to walk after not very far. I then realised that Paul was coming home at lunchtime, and if he walked in and found in the hall a pile of the clothes I was wearing when he left, along with bra, his first thought probably wouldn't be "Jude must have gone for a run". I need to get a running playlist - when Blue Spanish Eyes came on the ipod it didn't make me go faster but did make me smile. I did walk more than I did at the gym. The cold got me in my throat, which I'll have to get used to. However, it was only a first effort and next week I'll have no choice but to take to the road.
I got home, and the app is just wonderful. It told me I had done 1.46kms in 12.56 minutes. Considering how much I walked, I must do the running bit faster on the road than on the treadmill. The average minutes per km was 8.52. It told me my pace, and the speed I went during each minute I was out. I feel a bit of a fraud though - even I could have managed more. If I'd have known how excited I would be at this app I'd have done more (I might have to go out later). Now for the better bit. I then logged in the RunKeeper website, and not only does it give you the same information as the iphone app, it shows you the exact route you have been! I can't use the app when I'm away as I believe if you go on 3G you can expect a phone bill bigger than the holiday cost, but it will give me something to look forward to when I come home (sad, I know!). This is a great way to spy on people.
If the computer system is still down I might tidy my office then pack.
I'll update if I find free wifi, but it isn't as much fun without the figures.
What a landmark moment! App sounds fab. My only concern is the bra on the floor - surely one of the times in your life you need a bra is when you are running!
ReplyDeleteThought that myself Debbie. Still, it's ALL in the eye of the beholder.
ReplyDeleteIt would have been all in my eyes! Of course, I changed into my super sports bra. I couldn't run without it.
